Jamestown 2007

A “new” Jamestown is about to be unveiled to the world in spectacular fashion. After a decade of planning, hundreds of millions of investment dollars and research that has reshaped history, the world will be re-introduced to our nation’s earliest days when international attention turns to Jamestown, Va., May 11-13 for America’s Anniversary Weekend.

The weekend is the centerpiece of America’s 400th Anniversary, an 18-month international commemoration honoring the 1607 founding of the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.

Anniversary Weekend performance highlights include:

Friday, May 11: The Virginia Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of JoAnn Falletta, and Richmond Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Mark Russell Smith, play separately and then combine – for the first time ever – to premier new works by John Corigliano, John Duffy, Adolphus Hailstork and Jennifer Higdon written especially for the commemoration.

Saturday, May 12: The performance of Hornsby, Khan and Skaggs caps “400 Minutes of Music,” an afternoon-long program featuring contemporary rock infused with native American musical traditions from Brulé, a mix of folk, world, blues and soul music from South African artist Vusi Mahlasela, folk roots music from Michael Seeger, poetic urban folk from Jen Chapin, and alternative country from Scott Miller & The Commonwealth.

Sunday, May 13, 2007: Anniversary Weekend concludes with the performance of a 400-Piece Orchestra and a 1,607-Voice Choir created especially for the commemoration and representing most of the United States. The individual choral and orchestra groups performing at Anniversary Park throughout the weekend join for a powerful concert worthy of America’s 400th Anniversary. A fireworks finale completes the evening.

 

Yorktown

The battlefield is the site of the final, major battle of the American Revolutionary War and symbolic end of Colonial English America. TheYorktown Victory Center is a museum of the American Revolution that chronicles America 's struggle for independence from the beginning of colonial unrest to the emergence of a free nation. Gallery exhibits provide eyewitness accounts of the revolutionary era and tell of " Yorktown 's sunken fleet," ships lost during the 1781 siege of Yorktown .

 

Norfolk

Within an hour's drive from Williamsburg , Norfolk is well known for its military presence and is the site of the world's largest naval base. Nauticus, the National Maritime Center , located on the downtown Norfolk waterfront, harnesses the power of the sea in this interactive showplace. Nauticus also is home to the Battleship Wisconsin, open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day.

 

Virginia Beach

Sun-worshipers are coaxed to its shores each season for rest and relaxation. The three-mile oceanfront boardwalk includes larger-than-life sculptures, two entertainment stages, and a designated boardwalk bike path.
